Alaska Black Bear Hunt Information
Things to Know
YOUR HUNT
Spring black bears are typically dominate males which are easily found on the shorelines of the islands. It is not uncommon to see 10-20 black bears in an afternoon of hunting. We usually like to depend on the low tides to draw the bears further out on the beach and hunt mostly from noon until dusk. If you want a bear rug, these are the ones to get. Late summer bears, though bigger, typically are scarred up from fighting. We try to average over 7' for our black bears making the skull around 20" plus. Average weights are above 350 pounds. More information can be found here at the State of Alaska website.
WHAT TO BRING
Soft bags less than 40 pounds work the best with the float planes. Your hunting attire should include a warm jacket and socks, water proof boots, good rain gear, etc. You will have access to laundry facilities, so don't duplicate a lot of clothes. Layered shirts and sweaters (like wool) also work well. We recommend no smaller than a .30 caliber gun (belted magnum) or a similar weapon of your choice. You should be proficient with your weapon for the accuracy you intend to shoot at. Most rifle hunting requires shots that are less than 150 yards. Remember, we are in the heart of the Tongass National Rain Forest and average 140" of rain per year.
