Alaska Sitka Deer Hunting

Sitka Deer Hunting in Alaska!

KH Charters, Inc. is a provider of awesome Alaska Sitka Black Tail deer hunts, and we offer full service packages tailored to your needs. The season begins Aug. 1 and runs through Dec. 31 in a typical year. ADF&G alters the closing date depending on harvest rates. The rut is usually in full swing by the mid/end of Nov. There are really two types of deer, coastal and mountain. Both are Sitka Black Tail. The mountain deer are typically about the size of an average white tail. We also have our CAST & BLAST which offers Sitka Black Tail Deer/Black Bear and fishing (mid August thru mid September). All Sitka deer hunts can be either fully guided or unguided, depending on your experience. We are a licensed salt water Alaska guide service and offer Sitka deer transporter services.

TRANSPORTER SERVICE

Because of the abundance of forest service roads, the most popular method is hunting these access roads. Methods include using a truck/4wheeler and cruising the different areas. We have on occasion, transported customers to un inhabited islands, and left them in a drop camp environment for 3-5 days. Of course, they are hunting bear and deer. These areas receive the least amount of pressure and the size is significantly larger. We are able to use the boats for spot and stalk seeking to find the deer along coastal areas, again in combination with the cast and blast seasons Aug/Sept. You choose the site. Of the hundreds of miles of Alaskan shoreline and boundless islands, there are plenty of opportunities to choose from. You are responsible for harvesting, field dressing and skinning your Alaskan Sitka deer. Once you complete your Sitka deer hunt, we can assist in the transportation of your game back to your home.

TRIP LENGTH AND COST

All Sitka deer hunting packages are based on six days of hunting. You arrive on Sunday, hunt for six days and leave the following Sunday. Fishing trips may be combined with hunting excursions should you limit out early.

  • CAST & BLAST - $3,995.00 per person

Alaska Sitka Deer Hunt Information

Things to Know

YOUR HUNT

The Sitka black-tailed deer is smaller, stockier, and has a shorter face than other members of the black- tailed group. The average October live weight of an adult Sitka deer is about 80 pounds for does and 120 pounds for bucks, although dressed-weight bucks of over 200 pounds have been reported. Their summer coat of reddish-brown turns to a dark brownish-gray in winter. Sitka deer antlers are dark brown with typical black-tailed branching. Normal adult antler development is three points (including the eyeguard) on each side. Sitka deer antlers are relatively small, with very few scoring more than 110 points by the Boone and Crockett system. Throughout much of the range of Sitka black-tailed deer, normal hunting pressure has little influence on deer numbers. Bag limits vary from complete closures to six deer of either sex, depending on populations. The largest portion of the Sitka deer harvest is taken in November during the rut when both sexes respond to a call resembling the bleat of a fawn. During late November and December, heavy snow sometimes concentrates Sitka deer at low elevations allowing high harvest levels when local weather conditions are favorable. More information can be found here at the State of Alaska website.

WHAT TO BRING

Soft bags less than 40 pounds work the best with the float planes. Your hunting attire should include a warm jacket and socks, water proof boots, good rain gear, etc. You will have access to laundry facilities, so don't duplicate a lot of clothes. Layered shirts and sweaters (like wool) also work well. We recommend no smaller than a .30 caliber gun (belted magnum) or a similar weapon of your choice. You should be proficient with your weapon for the accuracy you intend to shoot at. Most rifle hunting requires shots that are less than 400 yards. Remember, we are in the heart of the Tongass National Rain Forest and average 140" of rain per year.
